Planning on being there for 2.5 days in between going to Europe. Obviously, I'd spend perhaps a few hours (or one night when I'm staying there) checking out the atmosphere/vibe in Reykjavik, but in general, my goal would be to hike and seek out the best natural features and wonders I could during my short stay. If anyone has advice for that, it would be appreciated.

I'm going there for the same amount of time next weekend and will report on what we actually did but right now the current plan is to head to the Blue Lagoon soon after arrival. We are renting a car and plan on visiting the ice caves and possibly driving the golden circle.

You may already be aware (hence your existing plan), but I want to mention as it may be of some interest to other posters ... Icelandair offers a stopover program. Use their airline to travel to one of the European cities they service, and they will allow you to arrange a stopover in Iceland for up to 7 days with no additional airfare.

It will be expensive. You might want to look into the buses to get around (did I say rental cars are expensive?). There are hotels/ hostels up toward the highlands that are on hiking trails.

Desirable/ convenient lodging tends to book up early for the summer so try to reserve early.

Eat before you go, food is very expensive, but they make some superb soups.

It can be ez to get by a few days without eating out.

When I have a short stay in a nice place with lots to do, I snack on produce from the grocery store and don't waste time sitting around a cafe.

We haven't been yet but Skogarfoss Waterfall will be one of the places we visit.

Thanks all! Here is what I had in mind preliminarily. I'm ok with cramming a lot, because you only live once.
Day 1:
Arrive at around 9
Car/Bus to Golden Ring, including
-Gullfoss
-Fault Line Park (?name)
-Geysir
-Famous Soup Farm Place
-Etc.
-Night either back in Reykjavik or out there if town along way.
Day 2:
Choose Option
1. Significant Day Hike Near Town (that high waterfall? Again, can't remember)
2. Head to Landmannalauger Mountains/Geothermal stuff
3. Head to Vik Coastline/Skaftafell (Glacier Cave)
Partake in Reykjavik nightlife including the famed midnight fest thing.
Day 3:
Tour the city throughout morning/early afternoon

Flight back at 5:40
This wouldn't get us everything but as far as I know would still cover Iceland pretty thoroughly. I'd like to see Volcano flow or even erupt from safe distance mind you, but I don't think that or Northern Lights will be possible. Hot Springs wouldn't be bad either. I know there's a really massive waterfall on other side of Island I'd like to see but it's probably too far.. anything I'm missing/thoughts? I plan on booking stuff ASAP to save.

Are you a diver (or even snorkeler)? I just read that you can dive (or snorkel) between the Eurasian and North American Tectonic plates at the Silfra fissure, where you can even touch both at the same time in one place. Obviously you dive dry because the water is very cold, and actually drinkable, but drysuit certification isn't required.

THAT is definitely on my list for a trip to Iceland! I would be tempted to add another day for the Northern Lights, too.

Thanks for sharing! That definitely sounds incredible. I have not dived, but I have snorkeled, and I know how to swim reasonably well and so I'd feel okay about being able to do that.

When you snorkel, you snorkel with a specially created dry suit too. The article I read said that it's so buoyant that it's difficult to even get your body a few inches under the surface of the water, so you will be fine.
