My passport is set to expire September 2017.

I have a trip to Europe in May 2017.

That gives me 4 months of validity after my trip.

I see in the rules that it requires 3 months of validity, but some travel sites recommend 6 months? Do I have any reason to worry? Can they reject me at the border, even if the rules state 3 months?

Double-check the passport requirements for each of the countries you are going to visit. If they say three month's validity, you should be fine.

Depends on the country, where you are going. Some countries might refuse entry, depending on their rules. If I were you I'd go ahead and renew my passport.

Unless you're planning on never traveling overseas again I'd just go ahead and get a new passport.

Then you don't have to worry, and you'll knock something off the checklist for next time your travel.

I suggest you contact the consulates of those countries and ask to make sure.

Also do it NOW. They are expecting a surge in passport application due to the 10 year anniversary
of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), Ten years ago the WHTI went into effect all those passports are all expiring, so State is expecting a larger number of renewals then normal.

Also when you fill out the application select the Box for "Extra" pages, Its "Free", But if you need extra pages (Large Book) in the future they charge you almost as much as a new passport to add pages.

We were running low so added pages about a year ago at the US Embassy in Bangkok, it was nice because getting +48 was the same price as 24. Granted I now walk with a limp when I have that phonebook in my pocket, but despite all the full page visa stickers I've still got some space to work with.

Last year, I went to Europe over the summer. Passport was set to expire in January 2016. I had about 4-5 months left and I had no issue when I entered Spain and left via Greece and France.
