We're planning to bring our car back up from the Ft. Lauderdale area to Bellingham WA in July. Although it would be nice to avoid the desert in the summer, I hate driving in mountains (my husband doesn't, but we trade off driving) and so don't want to take the most direct route.

We thought of heading up Florida, then straight across on 10 to Texas (where we might visit friends near Houston) and then on.

Should we keep on 10 all the way across - I'd like to avoid LA and cut that corner before getting onto 5 if possible, but maybe someone else has a better route.

Thanks for any ideas.

Do your car a big favor and go north. I80 to SLC then I84 NW gets you in cooler weather. Getting to I80 you have many choices.

You don't know heat until you drive through the desert in July. Even Texas is an oven.

But that brings you through the mountains, which I wanted to avoid. I know about heat - born and raised in Texas and have driven many times out 10. I know it's not the best summer route, but really really wanted to avoid going through the Rockies.

I80 does not go through mountains. It crosses a high plateau in Wyoming, then descends through river valleys to Ogden Utah.

Even if you went I10 then up through California, you'e going to have mountain like elevation changes, like I5 through the Grapevine, and you can't avoid LA traffic and mountains unless you take backroads through the Mojave desert, and that's probably not a good idea.

So you can avoid the rockies via the route I mentioned, but I think you really want to drive the southern route anyway and see Texas again. Your choice. Just make sure you have your auto cooling system checked before you leave, since your "chosen" route is really hard on cars and tires.
