I would risk dental work for post and crown, root canal ( needed on the spot) , but only after I exhausted my Insurance.

The two dental schools in Arizona offer clinics with free or reduced dental care for low income persons. In addition, there is an organization in Phoenix that sponsors free clinics for two weekends a year.

Similar programs happen elsewhere.

I remember many years ago visiting Los Angeles and needed to have a wisdom tooth pulled due to sudden severe pain. I was referred to a dental school attached to hospital in the Greater L.A. area that charged a small standard fee in advance of the procedure but I had to wait there several hours to get done.

You really think so?
Dubai has some pretty decent medical facilities that are equipped and staffed to the max.
Many other countries as well.

Let's see....
medivacation in Thailand (great food / nice beaches / quite safe / industry that has guest and recuperation wings 'resort style'... Have been treating the Europeans for 50+ yrs)

or Mexico... Some of the same, but not nearly as honest / safe / catering to medical tourism. Some I am sure is excellent. (be sure you find those places!)

Western accreditation is also a vital component for confidence in undergoing foreign medical treatments and Bangkok’s Bumrungrad and Samitivej hospitals were among Southeast Asia’s first recipients of the United States’ prestigious Joint Commission International (JCI) certification, which is seen as the gold standard for healthcare service providers around the world. Now Bangkok has no less than eight JCI-accredited hospitals for medical tourists to book with. Singapore, on the other hand, has 13 JCI-accredited hospitals.
BTW: for 30 yrs, Singapore has been encouraging it's residents to use Thailand as an option for affordable care.

I spent like 10 days in Thailand a couple of years ago.

Phuket is awesome. I haven't been to Mexico, so I can't really compare.

Is Thailand really safe? I doubt it. The crime rate in Asia is very low, violent crimes are very rare. But the safety of food in Thailand is pretty problematic. When you can't trust their food, how can you trust their medical procedures?

been frequenting Thailand for 25+ yrs (Spent most of 2012 - 2014 there (rural))
1) Never have felt unsafe (except a tad worried about losing my 5 yo 'red-head' kid ("Good Luck" - high demand for trafficking, but tough to hide! ))
2) Been treated very respectfully
3) Never been robbed or anything stolen from hotel, house, apartment, work
4) Food has never made me sick (I eat @ local markets)
5) No problem renting scooters / cars / and using public transportation (reading signs is not ez or even possible)
6) medical care has been super (fast, efficient, cheap, no issues) Always had English speaking staff, even in countryside
7) Expats / other visitors / residents are very interesting and helpful.
8) solid tourism economy, so the country CARES about tourists and retaining that economy.
9) Never hassled by police to point of needed to pay them off. (common issue in most of Asia)

Works for me.

There is a natural tendency to believe that the doctors and dentists in one's own country are the best. We do that here in the USA, but it was the same when I lived in Switzerland and the UK.

In reality, there are good and bad in every country. In many third world countries there are doctors and dentists who trained in a developed country and who are every bit as good as doctors or dentists here. The trick is to find the good ones.

When I lived in Geneva, Switzerland, I would drive across the border into France for dental treatment. A 5 mile drive and a 50% price differential.
