I'm going to visit some relatives in the mid-west for 4-5 days or so. The rest of my time, I'd like to go on a little vacation somewhere. I would love to check out Vancouver or Toronto but not sure I'd have enough time or there's enough of interest for me to fill up 4-5 days of vacation. What comes to mind is a trip to NYC and/or Florida, where I could take a cruise. I've been to NYC years ago on a rushed 24-hour trip where I roamed around a bit and even rode the subway. This time, I'd like to try exploring more of NYC, trying out more food, check out some of the great museums I've never been to, maybe even check out New Jersey or Connecticut (where I have some other relatives). The other idea is to make a very short pit stop in NYC for like a day, and then go to Florida and take a short cruise. I've never been to Florida, nor have I been on a cruise. Or, I could skip NYC altogether and just spend more time in Florida.

It's rare that I get to go on vacation, so I want to maximize my time and choose the best overall experience. I love being by the beach/ocean and thought a cruise would be a great way to get some fresh ocean air, swim on the ship, enjoy the various attractions that mega ships have to offer these days. But not sure if the idea of it is more appealing than the reality. Would it feel cramped? Would it be so windy on deck that I wouldn't want to be up there very long at all?

If you guys have any advice on what you'd do / where you'd pick if you had to choose between the options above, and why, it may help me make a more informed decision. Thanks!

go on cheap carribean and find out what deals are offered. you will be going off peak mostly, and an all inclusive vacation to punta cana or bayahibe would be very relaxing, and offer you a good vacation.

go to florida, stay in the keys, or the gulf coast, or south east florida, and just lay out on the beach.

haha you've tossed out several ideas that are extremely different. Where do you live? You're going to be in the midwest but considering PNW, Northeast, and FL vacations lol. It seems odd unless you're visiting from another continent.

Anyway, it really depends on what is more interesting to you and what your budget is.

Sure I think a cruise would be a great way to decompress before you return to work. It's one of the few types of vacations where I don't really feel like I need another vacation when I get home.

Then again, if you've only spent a day in NYC and barely took the subway then you've hardly scratched the surface and a more in-depth visit is well worth it.

Since you mentioned Vancouver and not sure if it's enough to do, I'd also consider pairing Vancouver with jaunts to Whistler and Victoria Island (I personally would totally enjoy a week just in Vancouver but I feel like you might not) or even getting a one-way car rental and driving between Vancouver and Calgary. I loved Calgary but for most people it's probably a less compelling, smaller version of Vancouver so you might not like it. However the travel between the two cities is spectacularly breathtaking to even the most hardened souls I'm sure. Spend a few days in Jasper, Banff, Lake Louise etc...the most amazing natural parks I've ever seen to be honest.

And lastly, if you do Toronto you could pair that with Niagara Falls and even Buffalo. Toronto could easily be a week's worth for me but if you need greater diversity of stimulation you can do big city in Toronto, natural beauty in Niagara Falls, small town charm in Niagara-On-The-Lake and an interesting picture of urban decay/renewal in Buffalo. This last one for me is particularly compelling as I've never done it. I've been to Toronto many times and Niagara Falls twice, but never Niagara-On-The-Lake and only stopped in for the night in Buffalo.

Have fun!!

As already written, 24 hours is not really considered a visit to NYC as NYC has lots of options to offer a tourist/visitor. Also NYC has beaches as does the nearby Long Island. One doesn't need to go to Florida for this. Also one can take a cruise from NYC if one really wants to.

NYC... no contest, forget going to all those neighboring places too unless there is some huge overriding issue, like a rich aunt in NJ who you want to butter up to remember you in her will.

NYC isn't like a lot of cities, 4-5 days will just start to cover what is here, barely enough time really, plus in May the weather is great & the crowds only start around Memorial day onwards.

I've lived in FL & 4-5 days would be plenty anywhere I saw there, NYC is like a whole different experience... but you must get away from Times Square & all the other tourists looking at all the tourists & visiting tourist shops.
