All I've heard is that Laos is one of those countries that may still have remote tribes in some deep woods that cannibals.

Can confirm, my wife has no left leg as a result of our travels in Laos.

Fortunately her first and middle names are Peggy Aileen so it kind of works, and we've found that buying one-ones for her ballet stuff is cheaper than tutus.

I traveled to and stayed in Laos for 3 weeks a few years ago. I went to Vientiane and Luang Prabang. It's a poor, undeveloped country. The government is just starting to loosen tight controls over the economy and as a result it still has that old-world feel. When i was there for example, there wasn't a single McDonald's or such in the entire country.

The cities, especially Luang Prabang are loaded with old French colonial architecture. The Laos food is fantastic and the people are very nice and friendly.

Let me know if you have questions.

I actually worked in Laos for a few years. As noted, beautiful hot humid country with great people. Food is good but that is very subjective. Not sure I would visit as a tourist, but that might be cause I was working there. (Worked in some middle eastern countries so I would not visit those either.)
Been quite a few years, so have to believe it is better than when I was there.

I watched a couple of YouTube videos after this thread and put it on my not to go list. I guess it always was on that list, I just verified it.

People may be nice but the general look and feel, and food looks pretty horrible.

Nah man the food is fine I think whatever video you watched gave an exaggerated impression. Laos is on the tourist trail and they cater to that in the main cities.

If you go to the main tourist areas like Vientiane and Luang Prabang there is so much good western food available. French cafes, pizza, steaks, burgers, Chinese, Italian, hell in Vientiane there is even a place that serves decent Mexican food. Vang Vieng has plenty of non-local food too but it tends to tilt more towards the backpacker and Chinese tourist crowd. Local food from Laos is fine, if you can eat Isan style Thai food you can eat most local food.

The good thing about Laos is the main tourist destinations (Vientiane, Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang) are also fairly easy to reach along the same highway. Just take the night train from Bangkok to Nong Kai and cross the border on food, you can get a visa on arrival at the bridge. The only exception for main tourist destinations is plain of jars which is way farther east near Vietnam border, there isn't as much western food there but it is still available we found a great Italian restaurant in Phonsavan.

Here some pics from last time we were there, pretty eh?

Are there still active bombs that detonate based on when the US dropped them?

Yes. Tony Bourdain just had a beautiful film on CNN Parts Unknown about Laos. Worth looking for .

I have visited only twice, in the late 1980s and mid-1990s. My impressions are no longer valid; the country has certainly changed. I would recommend a trip to Luang Prabang - a very pleasant city and a change from Vientiane - and I would recommend a boat trip along the Mekong and Nam Khan Rivers which offer a remarkable perspective on life outside the cities. Also, take advantage of the more laid-back city of Luang Prabang by visiting monasteries and temples. (Again, my information is old, so I can't speak to specific, current opportunities.) Enjoy your trip.
