Has anyone here taken a trip in the winter to see the northern lights? Where did you go? Looking at doing this next winter and undecided as to which location to visit (considering Alaska or Finland currently but open to others).

Consider Iceland. Lovely country with lots to see and do, and you stand a good chance of seeing the Northern Lights there.

Since a sighting of the aurora is never guaranteed, pick a place you'd enjoy visiting anyway, so the trip won't be a total disappointment if the aurora is uncooperative.

I would also consider Tromso in northern Norway but do you really want to go to the Arctic in winter? It will be brutally cold. September (or March) would be a better choice - 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of night - that should be enough for both sightseeing and stargazing.

Tromso in Norway is a pleasant medium-sized town that is another good place. Accessible by air or the coastal ferry.

Brontosaurus beat me to it. Tromso may not be as cold as interior towns because it is near the coast. But make no mistake, you will need very warm clothing.

Northern lights are stronger at north but sometimes very nice here too,in south coast of Finland.
Strong lights gives sometimes mystic feeling like sky is alive....Picture from northern Finland, rare pink lights.

I saw them many times, but then again I lived in Northern Canada and they were just part of the scenery at night. After a while, you just go - yeah, yeah they are there again.

I saw them from Dawson City, Yukon. Was not the main purpose of the trip but as soon as we heared that one can see them well from a certain spot, we managed to get there and were lucky.

You don't have to go all the way to Tromso. I saw them from Narvik in August. YMMV.
