I've lived in both places and I have to say I like L.A. better because of the weather.
However with the cost of housing raising astronomically with the property taxes close behind, even though I own my house free and clear, the yearly property taxes will cause me to have to give it up and move to a cheaper state.
I can't see paying $8,000/year just for the right to live in this state.

I hate LA.

I wanted to like it. It 'sounded' incredible on paper & from other people but I was there for a week and I just hated everything about it.

I love them both. I think NYC is the best city in the world, which is why I call it home, but I love visiting LA. If I had to live somewhere else LA would be my first choice. And LA definitely has the weather on its side, but as far as beaches go, the ones in The Hamptons are better, but only during the summer months.

SF Bay has better weather, less polluted air, slightly less congested traffic and more greens. The only downside is SF Bay isn't nearly as warm as LA.

But, if you love warm SoCal weather, San Diego is more pleasant than LA.

So, LA is the third best city in California.

NYC is the best city for investment bankers, not normal folks like me.

I lived in Marin for 4 years, so I know SF very well. Also, I have spent a good amount of time in San Diego. I wouldn't argue with what you are saying, but I find LA to be the most fun out of those three cities. I like the lifestyle. That is what puts LA in the top spot for me.

Another downside ... the Bay area is now more expensive than NYC.

I consider myself to be normal folk. Certainly not an investment banker. I'd still take NYC.

San Francisco is quite expensive, but Bay area isn't necessarily more expensive than NYC.

At least parking in Monterrey Bay is much cheaper than nicer parts of NYC.
