Last time I flown was 20 year's ago. Not to concern about the flying concern more about logistics ha. Wife and I are able to have 2 check bags. We are at 40 pounds each with the bags. I was thinking of spreading the weight putting some in a third bag. I am worried increases the risk of losing that bag and is it really necessary.

Thoughts?

40 lbs is under the 50 lb limit most airlines use to determine overweight charges. I'd not bother with a third suitcase. What I WOULD do is pack a collapsing travel duffel; then if you buy mOr souvenirs than you anticipated, you can put dirty clothes in the duffel and check it as a third bag on the way home.

Are duel has once again given great advice (sorry I can't rep you again).

I'll add the reminder that your wallets, prescription drugs, cameras, and ANYTHING that has sentimental value that if lost would break your heart MUST be in a carry on. The smaller the better, but dont check that stuff.

Since you've said you are heading to CA for a week and staying with relatives, it seems you have seriously overpacked. Take out half the clothes, trust me. You can always do a load of laundry, right?

This.

What are you taking that can't fit in a carry-on each?

Agreed. What on earth have you packed for a 1 week trip that would weigh 40 lbs/each bag?? You both need to do some serious editing. I just came back from 2 weeks in France, my suitcase weighed about 25 lbs and I still had overpacked!

Not to pile on, but yeah that is some serious over packing unless you are hauling stuff that you are going to give to your relatives. I have lived for months with nothing more then what I brought with my carry on.

If you're checking bags:
A) make sure you each have a change of underwear and clean shirt for first day, in case something gets lost
B) split each of your clothing between the two suitcases in case one gets lost

And as others advised, make sure medications and valuables are with you at all times

Agreed with the "you are overpacked" group.. Just did 10 days in Europe with a backpack and a carryon and still had stuff I didnt wear.

Carry one one or two pieces with ~7 lbs in each.
