Wife and I are going to California for the first time. We are staying at a relatives house. We leave late Saturday and leave Cali early Saturday morning. Breakfast, lunch, and 3 dinners should be covered. That leaves us to 2 dinners out and 1 dinner of purchasing items from the area. Plan to go to the San Diego Zoo and eat dinner in the San Diego area. Relative is allowing us to use their car while out there.
Wife and I are bringing a total of $800. Think that is enough for the trip?
$800 for a few meals and the zoo seems like a lot. I'd bring $500 and use an ATM card if more is needed. Food is not that expensive unless your aiming for high end. You may find that you'd like to try a good fast food spot like Carls Jr.
If your relative is providing a place to stay, that many meals, and use of their car, I would suggest bringing a little more and using some of that money to buy them a really nice gift.
I'm thinking you are going to need more than that. First of all, I would imagine you would do the right thing and take them out for a really nice dinner (somewhere besides a fast food joint!) to show your appreciation for their very generous hospitality. Also, if the meals you are planning on eating are at their home, and their food, ya may want to pick up some flowers for the table, and maybe a nice bottle of wine (assuming they drink, of course!). Remember, just because someone is being inviting, and very generous, it does not mean that it should be a free ride.
Taking my dad out to dinner want to spend $200 at max for the three of us. $60 max at the zoo outside of tickets. Then $40 max for make a dinner made at home. Then $50 max on bottle of wines for the week. $80 for lunch/snacks during the week. $50 at airport for food and snacks. Then $100 max for gifts/shopping.

Wait a second...why are you bringing that large amount of cash? That just invites disaster. Is this your first time traveling period? No one does that anymore in this century as the usage of credit cards and availability of ATMs are so prevalent.
Bring credit cards and your ATM card and use that, and just be aware of your budget.
