The tipping thread has made me curious. When staying at a hotel for 3-4 nights, how often do you have maid service?

If I'm alone I might get service once but if there are more of us in a room I may get service more often.

Never. When they knock on the door I ask for an exchange of towels if necessary, and any other items like shampoo or toilet paper if I'm out.

There's no reason for a maid to need to clean my room while I'm there - I keep it clean enough and can make my own bed. ;D

I'm not there during the day. Out of the room in the morning and not back until evening. So, it doesn't bother me a bit if they want to come in and leave fresh towels and take out the trash.

With kids, each day. Just me, maybe once or twice.

almost always I am out during the day when the maid service comes in. I tip accordingly so I do not sweat the small stuff.

I'm always out during the day too. It's irrelevant to whether or not I get maid service.

If someone else is going to come into the room, I usually lock any electronics or pricy items in one of the suitcases. Skipping housekeeping is more about not wanting to bother with putting stuff away than it is about not wanting to tip.

For me, skipping housekeeping has nothing to do with not wanting to put stuff away or not wanting to tip. It's more about not wanting anyone to waste the effort when it isn't necessary. I don't need a fresh towel every day, and there are usually 2-4 towels in the room even if I did. The sheets don't need to be changed; and I really don't care if the bed is made. I bring sufficient toiletries, so I don't need the little bottles replaced. If I have any trash that needs to be collected, I leave it outside the door.

I voted DND but the real answer is 0 or 1 which wasn't an option. That's the length of time that is right on the fence for me. Any longer and I almost certainly get a change at least once. Any shorter and I pretty much never do it lol. My reasoning is basically what you wrote above...I don't like to waste...energy, effort, resources, etc. And if I have trash I put it outside the door.
