When the price is right...usually a couple months in advance. But also after terrorist attacks - flew round trip from US to Belgium for $400 that way.

Best to do it 2 to 3 weeks before the trip, and try to buy tickets on a Tuesday.

I'm picky about departure times, so generally 4-5 months for international flights and 3-4 months for domestic so I can find a lower fare bucket for a schedule that doesn't require one to get up at the butt crack of dawn to make the first flight.

For last minute or emergency travel (our parents are far away and getting old), that's part of why I've got a stash of frequent flyer miles. Lets me arbitrage things in the American/United/Delta/Alaska programs so we can just go as needed and not break the bank.

It's no longer true the Tuesday is the best day. Looks like Sunday is a better shot. (I've read this in many different places.) https://www.komando.com/tips/12347/n...ets-online/all

And buying 2-3 weeks before the trip????? Worst advice ever unless your employer is paying for it.

I usually buy them 3-4 months out. I feel you can get the best prices then. Sometimes if you wait till the last second you can get a good deal too, but sometimes you might be out of luck and really pay a lot!

Tickets aren't always the cheapest 3-4 months out. Unless there is something significant like a large convention happening in your destination city, 6-8 weeks is usually far enough out for the best deal as prices often drop if sales are slow. If it's a slow route, 2-4 weeks is usually fine. The prices tend to spike at about the 2 week mark for slow routes and at about 3-4 weeks for more popular routes.

I try to buy at least 30 days in advance. But, I love to find good deals. Going to Punta Cuna September 3, still have not booked airfare yet. I hate layovers, so usually take American Airlines.

My wife and I decided last night to go to away next week.

3 hours later, we had airfare and hotels booked for Vancouver, Canada.

We leave Friday. Last minute trips rock!

I try to buy as far out as possible. But, as a deployer, this generally means no more than two weeks out now. In the past, though, I used to buy up to a year in advance.

i agree with this mostly. I do book six weeks out at least, and check back often for a price match guarantee .

emergencies are emergencies, you will pay last minute.

I also use ita flight matrix for the very best price that month.

the one time, that I must book 6 - 16 weeks in advance is the family vacation. we book when it is the lowest on points/reward/miles, vacations are fully confirmed with work, and everyone is in sync to go, the purchase will be made early. We have taken vacations we could not really afford this way, and it has worked out great. We usually rack enough points for a free flight for 4 each year.
