This is by far the biggest limiting factor in getting off my butt to travel.

I hate committing to tickets 8 weeks, 10 weeks, heck even 6 weeks in advance.
But I hate paying the price of anything closer in.

How far out do you buy tickets? When do you find the price break to be?

It depends.

When my travel schedule is very firm, and I'll travel by Southwest, there's no reason I don't buy it as early as possible.

OP, why can't you commit to travel in advance?

I book a long-range flight once a year for my annual vacations. I'm now already thinking of booking soon my flight to Johannesburg (SA) next...February. I wonder if I may postpone a little bit , though, or are there exceptional deals to have 7 months in advance ? but so far ahead personal circumstances may change too...it's a little bit of a quandary...that's the golden $ question...

About 2 months in advance for domestic flights and 3 months or more in advance for international flights. But it also depends on the time of year.

I like to book early and not have to worry about it.

Ditto It is one less thing to worry about. On expensive trips $2k+ pp I get travel insurance as well. So many things can happen right up to and into the trip.

Same here, but perhaps even farther in advance if the dates are firm (cruises for example - but we ALWAYS arrive a day in advance). If we are traveling internationally or on a cruise, I buy travel insurance to cover medical expenses and that covers our plane tickets, too.

Domestically, I don't bother with insurance. SW gives credit for cancellations. Others will give credit on a case by case basis (yes, I HAVE gotten that on a non refundable ticket - just last year, in fact, with Delta, and no, I do not have any status with them beyond our nearly 50,000 FF miles).

Your reticence to book in advance is puzzling. Maybe you're the type who just has trouble committing to anything, just making decisions in general.

If there is a destination in mind, I do a little research over a few weeks to see what plane tickets are going for.. Google Flights is awesome for this as they can track it for you.

That way you can see what the "normal" price is so when one comes out cheaper, you can jump on it.

14 days for US travel (I use SWA, so can always change for FREE!!!)

14 days to 4 months for international travel (depending on bargains / USD exchange / weather / free time / tourist season)

When there is a world event (Terrorism / economic crisis) I buy tickets !!! lots of tickets.

My mom did 4 months worth of VERY CHEAP travel after 911. such as Mediterranean and trans Pacific cruises for <$30 / day

Travel was VERY cheap in Europe after Brussels and Paris attacks (sad, but... the communities still need our dollars)

Looks into airfarewatchdog.com saves me tons of time and money. AND they follow SW airlines.
