Hi,

I'm going to Chicago solo and I wonder if I'd be fine going out on my own as a woman. I don't know where the nightlife happens, but I'll be staying in River North while there.

My DH and I stayed in the River North area when we visited Chicago last year and it felt very safe everywhere we went, and we walked everywhere. Obviously this isn't the same scenario since I had him with me, but had I been alone I would have felt very safe as well, because there are so many people out and about and there are not nearly as many panhandlers or people just loitering about as we have encountered in other large American cities. We are not nightlife people, though, and weren't out and about at night. Our son and his wife stayed at the same hotel where we stayed on Huron St. at Clark St. a few months after we did, and walked back from the Chicago Theater at 11 pm and said they felt completely safe, again not the same I realize, because there were two of them.

I think if I was to go there alone I would feel fine walking around before dark and then be more cautious after that, maybe not go out unless I took a cab and maybe I'm being too paranoid, but better safe than sorry in a strange city.

River North is wonderful, have a great time!

River North is good, if you are wandering anywhere in the central area of the city or north lakefront - the places tourists go, you'll be completely fine. I've been in the city for sixteen years all over the place on transit every day, going out every weekend, never had any problems and don't know any friends who have had problems either.

There are bad areas, but mainly they're quite a ways out west and south, areas you would never really travel to.

I walked around Chicago for a couple of days back in 2008, not one problem. Try one of the river tours, very interesting and enjoyable.

The only problem I find there, and this is every time I've flown into O'Hare, is that none of the official airport taxi drivers know how to get you to where you want to go. Maybe it's just my bad luck, but it's really frustrating. Next time I'll phone for a taxi when I arrive.

Just blue line to the loop. Takes about 45 minutes to the Clark/Lake stop.

The subway system isn't too bad either, if you don't have a lot of luggages.
