We only have time (2 days) for one. I'm thinking Barcelona. Thoughts?

Personally, I'd go to Barcelona, if only to visit the Spanish Civil War Museum. Of 1,240 reviews on tripadvisor, 97% gave it 5 out of 5.

While I'd choose Barcelona right away at first, thinking about it a bit Lisbon is a smaller compact city & in 2 days you could see more of what's interesting for a tourist while in Barcelona you would just get a small taste & feel in 2 days & feel there was so much more left to come back to see.

Either city is great tho.

Barcelona!
If only to see Gaudi's architecture.
Plaça Catalunya:
First take one of the double decker tour buses at the intersection near start of La Rambler, across from El Corte Ingles (huge dept store), across from Cafe Zurich (huge restaurant with outdoor seating great for coffee/pastry) to get an idea of where you'd like to explore more in depth.

You'll get to experience the Mediterranean.

It's doable in 2 days. I only stay that amount of time when I visit.

It took me more time to 'get my bearings' in Lisbon.

Another vote for Lisbon, Europe's sunniest capital. For what it's worth Portugal's capital is cheaper and built on 7 hills like Rome. It's beautiful.. Some call it a poor man's Paris. I think the main sites can be covered in 2 days as opposed to Barcelona. The Familia Sagrada by itself could take an entire morning.

Both are good places to visit. I probably would visit Barcelona though if I had to make that choice. I'd see:

1. The Picasso Museum
2. La Ramblas
3. Sagrada de Familia Cathedral.
4. The Gothic Quarter.
5. Parc Guell
6. La Boqueria (shopping mall)
7. Plaza Catalunya
Possible side trips to Montserrat and Salvador Dali's museum in Figueres.

I've been to both and with 2 days I vote for Lisbon. It's less crowded, less expensive, and just as beautiful, if not more so. Spend a day in Belem and visiting St. Jorge's Castle, and spend a day in Sintra 40 minutes away by train. You will not be disappointed.

Yes, this ^^^ 2 days in Barcelona is just a tease: some of the bigger attractions have timed entry (the Cathedral, among others), and lines can be long to get into other locations (Casa Battlo - sp?). So you could spend more time than you'd like either in line or feeling pressured to get to wherever at a particular time. not relaxing, especially with such a short time frame.
I haven't been to Lisbon in years, but if it's as nice as other replies here have said, I'd opt for it and reserve a bigger block of time for Barcelona on another trip.

OK, I am very embarrassed. I screwed up the thread title. It should say "Madrid or Barcelona".

We will be in Lisbon and then have two days in either Madrid or Barcelona. We are leaning toward Barcelona.

Sorry for the error.
