I sleep like a rock, so it's pretty bad if something disturbs me from sleeping. Still, there have been a few:

In Painted Post, NY- A hotel full of loud, drunk guys who had been hunting all day and decided to stay the night. The walls were paper-thin and they started fighting, shouting and breaking bottles. Got woke up when I finally drifted off by a guy pounding on my door, screaming "Open the door the f**k up, you cheating SOB! I know you were coming onto my wife!" There was a dial up port in the phone that started to malfunction when I laid back down and I heard loud beeps/dialing and constant voices talking. I slept maybe an hour or two

In the Detroit area: Loud, angry honking by a million Canadian Geese who were defending their nest from a couple of tourists from Florida who had wandered into the nest area. Then loud screaming from the tourists as the geese bit and attacked them.

Houston, TX-The loudest chorus of bullfrogs that I have ever heard in my life. Took hours to fall asleep and they woke me up several times.

Bolivar, TN-The door slamming to the room next door, loud shouting about "where's the good stuff?" then police sirens everywhere. Found out later that there was a meth-cooking operation in the room next door.

The very nice Hotel zum Storchen in Zurich. After late night of partying, the last thing I wanted to hear is the town church bell, right across the street, sounding off every 15 minutes starting at 6 in the morning.

Best sound we ever heard camping combined with two annoyances:

One year at the Annual Sturgis Rally in South Dakota we camped right next to I-90 and were lulled to sleep by the sound of Harleys roaring by all night long for a week. DH said it was music to his ears!

But one night we had a gang come roaring in late drunk and carrying on nearly until dawn revving their engines and just being obnoxious in general.

Just when we thought we'd get some sleep the Christian Motorcycle Association group decided to direct a little early morning evangelism toward our wayward brothers. They, honest to goodness, got out an organ and sang some hymns at the top of their lungs followed by a rip-roaring biker sermon over a PA system.

We were young and it was funny. Don't think I could laugh about it now except in hindsight.

As the saying goes:

You know your going to have a bad experience at your hotel...when:

The clerk offers you an extra door lock and says if you want your car safe..that will be $10 extra to park it in the fenced lit area.

So...we opted for the padded door lock.

2:30 am...shot fired from room next door. 2:33,bf has bags in hands and yells ..time to go!

There was little we could do....if we went outside..pop would go the weasel.

2:42 a knock at the door. Officers questioning us. When we asked to have them escort us to our car, they laughed and moved on.

Fwiw,we didn't plan this stay ..we found a vacancy sign and had been so weary from driving and getting detoured. At night it didn't seem shady. The next morning...we realized we were definitely in the wrong part of town!

Probably one of the few times I didn't want to know what happened next door...the less ..the better.

Not travel related, but neighbors mowing the grass at 6 AM on Saturday mornings. Day laborers blasting mariachi music while building houses on Sundays.

Just today I had a conversation with a coworker who just returned from vacation. They rented a cabin on a remote lake somewhere in Kentucky, and he said the only sound they could hear at night were people about a mile away, across the lake, laughing and talking late at night. He didn't realize that sound could travel that far when there is nothing else around or making any noise, and they found it very disturbing that those voices were so loud and broke up the otherwise peaceful nights.
