I found Delta to have the worst service, though it was years ago. I travel to Hawaii often and other areas and ironically the most expensive flight I ever took to Hawaii was also the worst. The staff was just crabby and very angry to everyone. I have purposely avoided them ever since.

I've only been on the plane three times in my entire life-consequently, all in 2013. I took SouthWest and American Airline. IIRC, AA had cramp seating while Southwest was the superior choice of the two.

I don't think flying will ever be a preferred method of travel for me (when there are other options available) until they stop charging for checked bags, and start charging for carry on bags, over 5 pounds. The 5 lbs should cover most women's purses.

I rally do find it so much less stressful to just check a bag rather than to be a turtle with my whole world in a bag on my back. Less fuss at security screening when you only bring along a laptop, one change of clothes, and anything else that shouldn't be checked, less hauling stuff a half mile or more from gate to gate on a connection, and the airlines are moving toward a 'track your bags' feature on their phone apps. Delta and Alaska also have '20 minutes or 2500 miles' guarantees for flights ending on domestic legs that incentivize the company to get everything to the carousel in a timely manner.

I got lured in by one of those bonus miles credit card offers earlier this year, figured I might as well check the last few flights because free bags were a card benefit, and am now planning on keeping the card once the annual fee kicks in because I know I'll get my money's worth in comped bag fees.
