I have visited Tallinn four years ago. The medieval center of the city is very small and you could probably visit everything in 2-3 days tops, (they also have a medieval festival as well in the summer with a market and events such as jousting). If you are interested in nightlife it is a great destination since it is a popular destination for stag parties for Finns, Swedes, etc due to much lower alcohol prices. That being said it is a nice city that is worth a visit if you are ever in the area.
Go for it, Tallinn is lovely. It has what is said to be the most intact medieval walled city left in Europe. We spent a couple of weeks in Tallinn, rented a serviced apartment so that was nice.
Public transportation is good. Prices are affordable. People are nice. (Beware the Brits who hit Tallinn for a weekend of binge drinking)
There is also regular ferry service between Tallinn and Helsinki for a day trip.
Nice to know! I'm going to be in Tallinn (though just for one day) on a cruise next year. If it's anywhere near as pleasant a surprise as Dubrovnik, Croatia was, I'm excited already. Some of these lesser known cities are absolute treasures!
I did an overnight there some years ago using the fast ferry from Helsinki. It was pleasant, interesting, and moderately priced. Personally I would recommend it as a stop of a trip exploring the Baltic but not as a primary destination.
It would be a shame to be in that area and not see Helsinki and (if at all possible given visa complications) St. Petersburg.
Gotland (in the Baltic off Sweden) is another interesting and not well known (at least to non-Scandinavians) destination.
My parents just got back from there. I believe they were there for about 10 days after visiting Sweden, Norway, and Finland. They loved it. Sounds like a really cool place with friendly people.
I thoroughly enjoy many cities in Europe, and Tallinn isn't an exception. It may not be a place where it has a ton of things going on. But, for a relaxing, affordable destination with the "Old European" vibe, you can't do much better. It has forest and waterside parks right within the city, is extremely walkable, safe, and the architecture is simply gorgeous. The general aesthetic there is just overwhelmingly nice, and as others have mentioned, it is a great hopping off point as well. Definitely one of the prettier cities I have been to and a must visit. I could be happy just living there and taking in life there for a month or two.
I stayed overnight there on my way to Russia. Such a gorgeous, fairy tale city. Like one poster said, 2-3 days max visit is preferable. I'd also recommend Helsinki.
