We did Amsterdam and Germany in December and went to the Christmas markets. Great because there were no crowds and weather was cold but not miserable. I'd add on skiing in the alps and Paris with that much time.

Thank you everyone for your well thought out and great answers.

I lived in Aussie for 2 years so I don't think I'll go there this time. What are your thoughts on Uruguay?

When you rode the trains was the scenery nice or was most of it covered in snow? I don't mind traveling in the winter but I would want to see scenery on the trains that you could actually see.

I'm partial to SE Asia as well, in no particular order: Bali - Java - Singapore - Penang - Burma - Chiang Mai - Laos - Vietnam. Mix & match.

So. America: I've been to Buenos Aires & it is terrific, very European in feel & it was cheap, good steaks & beautiful women. You can go to that big waterfall on the Brazil border from there easily. Chile is very nice too, Santiago, Patagonia, wine regions. I guess with 3 months you could squeeze in Brazil too which is a huge region with too many sights/regions to mention here.

I was thinking warm, but the suggestion to go to central Europe for Christmas is quite good & you would be around for various Carnivals in February as well.
