Hi Friends.

I'm a Canadian who now lives in Los Angeles. Every year I take 3 weeks to a month to travel somewhere in December. I'm having trouble deciding where to go this year.

Get at me with some suggestions. I'm 33/M, well-travelled and open to exotic locations, active, and equally comfortable in both warm and cold weather climates.

If YOU could go anywhere in December for this period of time, where would you go and why?

I'm open to any and all suggestions, and not overly concerned if it's somewhere I've been before. I just like learning about why you would recommend a certain spot.

Thanks in advance for your help.

We enjoyed a trip down the Baja 10 years ago. Cabo San Lucas is roughly 1000 miles south from the border. As you get to the lower end you pass a marker on the roadside designating the Tropic of Cancer, you have driven to the tropics. There are some neat old towns along the way.

You do need to research this before you go, there are things to know, like one stretch where there are no gas stations. We brought extra gas in cans and stopped to top up along the way. We were in a group of 12 motorhomes and travel trailers which is a comfort. We had a lot of fun.

I like New Orleans in December. My husband and I went there several consecutive years in early December.

The weather is reasonable, the streets aren't packed with tourists, and the French Quarter doesn't stink. Everything that's available during the hot, sticky, touristy months is still there.

Not sure it's a place I would want to spend three weeks in, though.

With three weeks you can go far, why not Indonesia?

Go to Bali for beaches, rice fields, and drunk Aussies to hang out with
Go to Jogja for amazing temples
Go to Flores to see landscapes
Go to Komodo area to see dragons and some of the best snorkeling in the world
Go to Borneo for the rain forest hiking
Go to Sumatra for the apes

Skip Jakarta.

The entire south America is for you to explore. Brazil, South Chile/Argentina, Ecuador/Peru.

Just don't do the US mainland or the Caribbeans. They are boring (definitely not exotic).

Capetown. Perfect weather in late november, early December (average 77 degrees daytime). CT is safe and the surrounding area is beautiful with literally hundreds of wineries. Take a drive or organized small group tour thru the garden route to see some of the world's most gorgeous coast line. (I've no idea why they call it the garden route - it's a misnomer.) Elizabeth City is the end of the route, where you can be picked up and taken on safari in the Eastern Cape - spectacular and no anti-malaria drugs required.

One of my all time favorite vacations and all very doable in 3 weeks.

Yep, Cape Town for the wine and food, up the coast to Addo Elephant National Park, then fly from Port Elizabeth to Joburg, up to London and train to Edinburgh for Hogmanay (New Years.) Magical.

Southeast Asia is nice that time of year. I am partial to Vietnam, you can see quite a bit in three weeks.

I would recommend the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador as a South American destination.

An alternate destination would be Australia as December is summer time there so it is nice warm.

A third suggestion would be Israel which has moderate weather normally in December and has lots to offer the tourist.
