People from China, Russia, Mexico etc. need a visa, not just a passport.

So apply for the visa, what's the big deal? People apply for visas to visit foreign countries all the time.

It costs money and time. For example I would have to go to New York to submit the materials, which costs at least one day.
Often times we just skip it and go to Iceland which does not require a separate visa.

Well, there you go. Skip UK if you don't want to be bothered with the visa process. Simple.

EU citizens need passport, no visa and travel only with ID card is possible in Schengen.

US citizens will not need a visa for short visits anywhere in Europe. They will need a passport to get to Europe.
US citizens can stay in EU for 90 days in 180 days period. For longer they will need visa.

Depends on arrival airport and time of travel. You can be hours in line if you are unlucky.

They don't. The majority of tourists to Britain are from the continent and America, and they don't need visa for entering. Besides they receive more than 30 million visitors each year. They don't need more.
