Yes, there is a passport/visa control from Schengen-area to UK. No matter if you go by airplane, ship or train.

As said above one needs to go through passport control when entering the UK from anywhere outside the UK.

OK thanks.
I can imagine how many potential tourists they lose each year. However maybe they do not need more tourists anyway.

I don't think they lose many tourists. UK was never in the Schengen area and people are used to it. For EU citizen, the European ID card is enough, no passport or visa necessary. And overseas tourists are usually well prepared and would not stay away from London just because of one more passport control.

I had Schengen visa and Swiss visa (at that time Switzerland was not a member).
I have been to France, Italy, Austria etc but never been to Britain though I'd like to. Just too lazy to apply for another visa.

However, I understand those who are really interested will not mind the extra paperwork.

Maybe you are confusing passport and visa.

US citizens will not need a visa for short visits anywhere in Europe. They will need a passport to get to Europe.

Several nations (China, etc.) can apply for Schengen and UK visa together in one single application.

Why are you trying to avoid passport check? It only takes a minute.
