I am trying to plan for a 2 to 4 day road trip with my wife and 2 kids - 3 years and 1.5 years next weekend to try and make my wife's birthday memorable.

We are OK with up to 14 hour road trip one way from South Carolina, preferably towards Northern states considering that this is summer.

We have been to Washington DC, New York and Boston before. So prefer a different location.

Please advise what would be a good place I can visit next weekend to make this journey enjoyable and memorable.

I am considering two options travelling from my home in South Carolina to

Option 1 - Chicago

Option 2 - Pittsburgh - (If possible from Pittsburgh to Cleveland - Detroit / Lake Erie)

and be back.

Please advise what would be a good option.

14 hours for a 2- 3 day trip?!!? God help you. With little babies? OMG.

I'd also think you would have difficulty finding hotel accommodations for next week.

How about the beach. Nice ones in SC and NC. Mountains. Nice ones in NC Ashville, NC? Raleigh, NC?

How about getting somebody to watch the kids, go out to a nuce resort, take the wife out for a spectacular dinner. Then spend a couple of days locked up in the room. BOTH of you be happier and feel 'special'.

I know you mean well but I don't think there would be anything enjoyable about traveling for a weekend to any of those places from SC with a 1.5 and 3 year old. I say this as a mom of 2 kids that are 8/9.

What about somewhere closer. What about Pigeon Forge TN?

What are your favorite activities to do on your vacation?

While Chicago is a great place to visit for a couple of days, I would be a bit bored hanging around Pittsburgh or Clevelend without a specific plan or things to do in the area around those cities.

I just can't imagine anyone going to Chicago for a vacation. It's one of the most dangerous cities in the US. I have lots of suggestions, but apparently you like big cities, and I have yet to find a big city worth traveling to, especially for a vacation.

I was told that Chicago is dangerous too as well at this point with all the shootings that happened in July.

Chicago was first in my list last week and based on these suggestions, I started thinking other alternatives.

What are your other suggestions... I am open to smaller cities too

We don't want to go South as we plan to visit these during the winter/late fall. Same is the case with Smoky mountains.
