I'm heading out to the airport in 95 minutes for an eight day trip. I still have to shave and shower and pack my bag. This is pretty normal for me. How soon do you get ready before heading to the airport or whatever terminal?

I'm a hot mess when it comes to packing. I'll pack, then I'll take half of it out. Then I'll put half of that back in. Then I'll take everything out and start over again. Rinse and repeat. I have no idea why I don't just empty my closet into the biggest suitcase I can find and get it over with...... I don't seem to have the packing gene.

And after all that, I'll have forgotten something essential. <sigh>

Day before. Have a check list, pack it, forget about it.

Early am flight - night before.

Afternoon or evening flight - am that day.

Going away for a month? Definitely the day before. And checking that we have adequate prescription drugs 34 weeks in advance.

It depends on the trip. If it's a two-day business trip, I can throw a bag together in a matter of minutes. If it's a week(plus) vacation that involves more planning and multiple outfits that need to be 'mix-and-matchable' or items that aren't in typical rotation at home (swimsuits, hats, etc), I might start laying those things out in the guest room as much as a couple weeks ahead. Not because I need all that time, but because I want to put those items someplace out of the way as I happen to think of them, so I don't forget about them when it comes time to actually pack.

I "pack" mentally for weeks before the trip, and I make multiple lists: clothes, toiletries, things to be done around the house before the trip (e.g., get cat sitter lined up). To me, planning the trip is as enjoyable as taking the trip.

As for the actual packing, that takes place the day before -- get the laundry done, any last-minute ironing, and put stuff into the suitcase and the carry-on bag.

The morning I leave.

However, the one time I packed the night before, my sister called me at 4AM (she works in the airport) to tell me my plane to Aruba didn't come in the night before and to call US Airways and get on a flight out of Charleston.

We did and made it to the 6AM flight even after driving an hour because I had packed the night before.

We got to Charlotte and everyone had slept on Red Cross cots the night before because of an ice storm.

We got out to Aruba three hours late but still got to Aruba!

One to two days before the departure day. Day of departure, toiletries that I used that morning go into the bag.

We leave in 10 days to go on a trip. Will be out of town for 10 days. I'm already mentally going through my checklist of things to take.
