I personally enjoy the mountains. I like the Durango Silverton train and Great Sand Dunes. A weekend in Taos or Santa Fe would be nice. I would love another trip to Yellowstone. I don't know what you like to do, but all of these places should offer a little relief from the heat.
Next trip near Las Vegas... drop in to Valley of Fire (50 Miles NE) Great place to camp, and sunrise and sunset are spectacular colors on the rocks.

I too am a mtn person.

Fortunately I grew up in Estate Park and for 7 yrs of college I drove a truck 3x / week to Yellowstone. (I still love it, but Tetons are better, especially via kayak in early AM or late dusk. Snowy Range, WY is one of my favorites and we often did that as a motorcycle trip after work.

Snowy Range Scenic Byway - Centennial | Travel Wyoming. That's WY

Next week... Vedauwoo for the Meteor Showers!(very nice (dark) skies for star gazing)

Tomorrow... Utah Mtns (day / weekend trip flying to SLC for $49. )

just in time for SPEED week and Bonneville Salt Flats!

As a 'kid'... did the 'Then Came Bronson' thing nearly every weekend. (when not working)

So many more places I want to see!

My J-O-B allowed me to travel a lot (Internationally) 30+ yrs, I have yet to tire of traveling... took a RTW for ALL of 2016 to avoid USA 'election year' . That was a good choice.

Where would that be? I see all sorts of $39 deals at places like Harrah's, the Stations, and the like. When you go to book the hotel rooms, there is a $25-40 resort fee which is also taxed. The last time I clicked on a $39 rate, the "out the door" price was $84.

Please let me know as I need a room for a single night MIDWEEK in March 2018 and the best "out the door" deal I have been able to find is $55.

Fortunately our farm cats and dogs can manage the place on their own. (they prefer that...)

Very fun, very fast, interesting places to see.

We travel via guest homes ($free to $20 / night worldwide) Hospitality exchange - Wikitravel
rent cars $10 - $20 / day
Eat local / grocery ($10 / day for 2)

'short trip' Favorites: (fair weather seekers)
SF (Oct - May)
San Diego / La jolla (Winter)
San Antonio / Austin / Hill Country, TX (Fall - Bluebonnets)
Estes Park, CO (Summer)
Knoxville / Nashville / Ashville (Fall and spring... leaves and flowers)
DC / Baltimore (Spring)

Cape Cod / Providence / Boston (Fall and Spring)
Chicago (occasionally) (Spring)
Madison (Spring)

Tampa (Winter)
New Orleans (winter)
Pensacola (winter)

Tucson / Tombstone / Sierra grande- Winter

Nearby main home... (cool PNW summers)
BC / Vancouver / Victoria / Vancouver Island / Mt Rainier / North Oregon Coast
Daily... Columbia Gorge / Portland (Very nice weekend destination during Wildberries (now) / fresh Salmon (now) / Wine season (Soon) / tours Home* |* Columbia Gorge Wine Country)

Too many places... not enough time

look up events / concerts and go take a quick trip!

For SF I usually do not get a car (parking is a pain and expensive) or... I stay at Ft Mason Hostel (free Parking and VERY close to most of SF)

Enterprise has $9.99 cars on 'off-airport' sites / weekends
What a list! That about sums it up! I think I will keep the list for future suggestions

I've thought of that!

NYC is just a place I change planes, might be nice to see the sights while there

My main goal is a brief change of scenery, something to re-charge my batteries, lift my spirits, etc, etc. Right now is too hot for many of these places, but I will certainly keep them in mind for later! Las Vegas used to be our get-away destination, but never in the heat of the summer.

Well, it will be Fall soon enough, perhaps I will postpone my trip until then. Until then just thinking about a getaway gives me a lift!

Midweek in March for cheap will be tough because of spring break. If you can find $55 with resort fee included, I'd take that.

I always spend my time downtown and several properties there have no resort or parking fees. I have stayed at Four Queens midweek for $29 per night (no resort fees). Right now I see some rooms at Main Street Station, for example, for $39 (no resort fee) for some weekdays in September.

I also get emails for deals like Golden Nugget for $29 a night (they ave a resort fee but I think it's a little lower, at like $15 per night) and a list of coupons to go with it like 2/1 buffets, free drinks, etc.

There are LOADS of deals, you just have to look.

Second vote for Asheville. I would suggest you use the Charlotte airport. Asheville is a small regional airport which will cost you more money and time wasted on layovers. Charlotte is onlybav2 hour drive to Asheville with some lovely scenery and interesting small towns along the way.

Other ideas for summer travel that have nonstop short flights out of Austin: Denver, Albuquerque and Cleveland (the single most underrated city we'veever visited, domestically or internationally. )

If you want a big city, consider Chicago. Both SF and NY are 3 or more hours fight time.

If you can wait 2 months, I'd add phoenix to the list. Really too hot in sept and october. .Better yet, plan a second weekend away in the spring to see the desert bloom in phoenix.

Seldom too hot in SF. ~70F for the next 2 weeks
I will be there 2x this weekend (connecting to SLC)

(Summer CAN be foggy... but the wine country is <1 hr away, and often if foggy in SFO, you just go across the bridge! Oakland has really nice museums (of which I will go see the end of a photo exhibit between flights on Saturday) Santa Cruz is 1 hr

CHEAP flts from AUS or SAT

i just booked my Nov / Dec stuff so I can enjoy the Hill Country Christmas parades.

tho we really like our HC TX home... we seldom venture there in summer (it is a farm with main home rented an a FREE cabin (and shop) for us.)

Works great... someone to watch the place, mow, feed the pets... + $1000+ / month extra income (from each home) for us to travel! + it is a 'tax-deductable-expense' to travel between rentals (in CO, WA, TX). 50% of food too! (as allowed for direct activities related to the rentals. We rent ALL our main homes and travel at will.

Our renters / boarders are very happy, as they have the place to themselves most the time. One renter has stayed 10 yrs, most stay 5-7. Several cry when they have to leave the nice view and peaceful home sites. We have never had to ask them to leave... usually something comes up (like they have to go care for a disabled parent, or wayward adult child.)

Don't let the heat wear on you .. travel soon... SWA has a very good sale at the moment - free bags, free changes, FAST boarding, happy employees, CEO in Blue Jeans... I usually have 20 - 30 flights booked ahead. (28 today) most I will take, some will get changed as it try new places.

I'm with you about the coins vs tickets, but I still love to gamble. Vegas is too commercialized for me now. We just do small casinos in Michigan. (we share a border)

Yellowstone? Nope. Yawn. Boring. A tourist trap. We went there last summer and I was SO disappointed. Huge long roads with no scenery and almost bumper to bumper traffic. Old Faithful could have been a fire hose hidden underneath, shooting up from the ground for all the "awe" it was supposed to give us. We sat in the baking sun for an hour, surrounded by hundreds of people (we were actually lucky to get a seat)
We saw a few Bison... not a big deal.
