In the 70's I was going to school in the Midwest & a few times I hopped on an "alternative" hippy bus service - Green Rabbit - that went from SF to NYC along I-80. They would throw in a "side trip" stopover somewhere in the Rockies for a day but I never was on that segment, I caught them at a truck stop diner in Iowa & went east & vice versa.

It was an old 1954 GMC motor coach with "Church of Universal Consciousness" on the sides, the interior had 2 rows of seats either side behind the driver & mattresses covering the rest of the bus, there was a curtained off area in the back for the relief driver to sleep. It was basically a party on wheels right out of a Cheech & Chong movie, always wine & guitars & new friends made. 2+ days...

Cheech & Chong? Hmmm. Me thinks there was more than just 'wine' on that bus

Over 6 days from Shanghai to Chongqing, on a ship.

On the land, it was 36 hours' train from Beijing to Chengdu.
