I've done my fair share of flying and I have always found that most of the websites are all alike! It's hit or miss. It's rare you can get a cheaper flight by booking directly with an airline. Southwest you have to book directly with them.

Be aware that, on third party sites, when you go to book a fare, it often won't complete. Only on booking do you find it's no longer available. Seems like bait and switch to me.

Part of it is that both third party and the airline's own sites tend to cache fares and then display them to reduce server load during searches. So you could be getting 20 minute old data that's displaying fare buckets that are now sold out.

I can believe that, and can imagine a situation where airlines do this to drive traffic to their sites and sell at a higher price. Who knows...

Be aware too that booking through a 3rd party website has downsides in case anything goes wrong. Chances are the airline will offer you no help and tell you to contact the ticket seller. Buyer beware of who you book with.

We get the emails from Scott's Cheap Flights and when something interesting leaves out of Phoenix we look into it. It tells you when fairs are cheap. Most of the flights are out of more major airports, so if you live close enough to that airport it might be worth it. But one never know when a flight for a particular city will come up, so in your case it might not be the way to go (unless you don't have a specific time you are traveling).
