I love road trips! Mostly all I've been doing in recent years, since I can no longer afford the big vacations (unless someone else like my parents are paying). Plus I can bring my dog, and he's a great travel companion. We've gone on road trips to San Diego, L.A., Tahoe/Reno, northern CA, and some other places within a day's drive from the Bay Area. In the past, my longest road trip was to Wyoming via Oregon/I-5, then coming home along the Idaho-Nevada route. Beautiful drive, with the exception of south-central Idaho.
Going to Peru was an experience I always will rank high on my list of trips. Peru is geared up for tourism and getting people to and from Machu Picchu. We enjoyed the whole trip with several days in Lima and a few in Cuzco and two at Machu Picchu at an eco-lodge in the jungle. I will go back.
A couple trips to northern and central Italy with five or six days in a single town would also be near the top of my list.
It depends on the purpose of the trip.....
My best "party" vacation: two weeks in Amsterdam and Ibiza with 9 of my friends for my 30th Bday
My best "party" city: Berlin
My best "out of my comfort zone" vacation: India
My best "off the beaten path" vacation: Myanmar
My best places to eat: Tie Italy and Japan
Every vacation for me has it's "absolute best" moments, love experiencing new things.
We had a great experience in Roatan. We had no expectations. We stayed at a family owned place. We had A/C, a kitchenette and a cat that slept on our bed at night. We had a short walk to the beach where we ate flash-fried calamari, snorkeled in warm water and bought things from the Banana Donut guy. When it rained, we sat on our porch and watch the rain drip off the jungle.

My next trip is going to be Wyoming, I really haven't been west of the Mississippi much so I'm really looking forward to this.
One of my best vacations was Venezuela but I can't recommend that today.
