Option 1:
-Fly from Krakow - Minsk (2hr total flight time with a 2hr connection in Warsaw), stay in Minsk
-Flight from Minsk to Lviv (1hr total), stay in Lviv
-Train from Lviv to Kiev (6hr total)
Option 2:
-Train from Krakow to Przemyśl (4hr total)
-Train from Przemyśl to Lviv (3hr total), stay in Lviv
-Flight from Lviv to Minsk (1hr total), stay in Minsk
-Flight from Minsk to Kiev (1hr total)
Both options cost about the same. Option 1 has about 5hr of flying time, while option 2 is only 3hr. Train time is the same. Travel time to/from the airport should be the same with both.
I'm leaning towards option 2 since it's less flight time and more flexible, but it seems crazy to leave the Ukraine, only to come back a few days later.
Option 2 would be my choice. I always opt for rail travel over airline travel when possible because I like to see the countryside and meet local people, which is more likely on trains. And the time saved would clinch it.
I'd opt for the shorter travel time, unless you'd have enough time to do some exploring at a layover. While I absolutely love train travel as a general matter (and prefer it over traveling by air), I prefer an overnight sleeper train trip . . . taking a 3-4 hr train ride in what can be accomplished by air in an hr isn't that appealing to me.
Option 2. I don't know why you think it's crazy to cross the Ukrainian border twice. They don't bite.
That's the option I went with because the flight options were more flexible and total travel time is less. I didn't think it was crazy, just illogical to leave the country, then come back only a few days later.
