We'll be driving from San Francisco to Austin in December and I was hoping to find some good sources to help us navigate the trip and steer us away from bad weather (mostly snow). We have no time limitations so if we have to drive a few hundred more miles or it takes an extra week, that's fine with us. I typically have used Waze, but found that fairly ineffective when it comes to inclement weather. Any suggestions?

Both I-10 and I-40 are usually pretty easy drives, the Flagstaff and Albuquerque areas can get snow. It's not that long of a drive so you should be able to check the weather for your route before you leave and plan your trip accordingly. I usually do a search for DOT webcams in each state and check the road conditions if there are any areas that I'm worried about.

Apps like Weather Underground let you search for information on cities down the road and return ten day forecasts and current radar for those locales. I’d probably plan to just hunker down in a hotel for a day or two or maybe sightsee while waiting for the snow plows to clear the roads ahead of you rather than trying to drive fully around storms
