Hi, wife and I are looking to go somewhere 3 to 4 days for our Anniversary at the end of November.

Looking to go to a location no more than 5 hrs away by car on average from CT. Location wise we are close to Hartford.

Looking to spend no more than $500 for boarding.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Bar Harbor, Maine? I'm sure Maine is cold that time of year, but with that time frame and budget....well....you don't have a lot of options.

Newport, RI, Western Mass, Vermont, New Hampshire, tons of places to go. What would you like to do while on your trip?

If you go anyplace outside of a good sized city in New England this time of year, check to make sure things are in fact open. Many attractions, shops, and restaurants are only open seasonally, usually from Memorial Day to Columbus Day, in this part of the US. It’s likely that in a town the size of Bar Harbor, almost nothing will be open in late November. Besides, Bar Harbor is 6.5 hours drive from Hartford.

Chances are some things in Newport RI will still be open then. You could also try places like Portland ME or Providence RI. Boston or NYC lodging will likely be out of your price range. No idea if someplace like Philadelphia is someplace you can afford.

My suggestion. Go to some random place you never even considered. Usually those trips end up being the most memorable and exciting.

Its a bit more than 5 hours, but still doable. We enjoyed touring Fallingwater, and Kentuck Knob, Frank Lloyd Wright houses in the Laurel Highlands area of PA. The houses are 5 minutes apart.

It would be easier to suggest something if we knew your age and interests. Do you want gourmet food, or a Denny’s? Back in the day, we went rafting in this area also, but perhaps November is too late in the year for that. If you research the area, I’m sure there must be other things of interest on the way, or in the area.

Maybe you can just find a cabin in the nearby mountains with a hot tub and hiking trails, and a few good restaurants.

I say get into your car and just drive the back roads... no major highways. Choose a direction and go, without even looking at a map. ( but I also suggest that you take a cell phone, a map and a GPS for safety)

Just make sure you read the road signs that you aren't entering dead end roads or that you'll be getting stuck or lost on non-maintained roads.

You'll find small towns that are gems and the scenery will most likely beat anything you'd see on a freeway.

463 Beacon St Guesthouse, Boston - bed & breakfast in an old-style building in the Back Bay part of Boston (in the center of everything, walkable & romantic). Inexpensive, a bit scruffy but authentic/atmospheric. Good if you value atmosphere & history over luxury and "amenities". Suggest arriving by train - parking is expensive in Boston (if you must park, Westland Parking Garage on Westland Ave towards Fenway Park is probably the cheapest in the area at $33 per day - I think they might have lower rates for a weekend).

If you are really cheap: private room at Hostelling International (Boston, Martha's Vineyard, somewhere on the Cape - Hyannis, I think). Check out AirBnB too.
