Next year I will make a road trip from Montana through North and South Dakota and back to Montana. Do you have any recommendations of places that I shouldn't miss on that trip? The Black Hills are already on my list.

North of Mt Rushmore and the Black Hills in ND is Teddy Roosevelt's ranch which is now under the National Park Service.

The Dakotas are the only states that I have never visited. We sold our camper and have retired from traveling, so I guess that it will never happen.

Never say never!! If you still want to go there I'm sure you will make it one day.

If you're into kitschy Americana, plan a stop at Wall Drug and/or the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

The Badlands are beautiful, too.

Edit: If you're going through Wyoming on I-90, take a little detour and check out Devil's Tower.

Haven't been to either state thus far, but the research I've done suggests the following might be good options:

South Dakota
-Wind Cave National Park
-Custer State park
-Badlands National Park
-Mt. Rushmore

North Dakota
-Theodore Roosevelt National Park

We did a bus tour of south Dakota a few years back & we really enjoyed Crazy Horse. If you like natural history, you can visit the Mammoth dig, which has woolly mammoth bones preserved at an old drinking hole, you can walk around it. If you are more into live animals, you can go to Bear country, where rescued bears & bear cubs run around, lots of fun to watch.

Of course if you don;t like skeletons or bears, then these are not for you I would also say seeing MT Rushmore in day & at night are two different experiences, I think if you get a day parking pass, you can return at night for the lighting ceremony. OH & the museum about how MT Rushmore was carved is worth a visit too. That is in Keystone

What routes are you planning on traveling? If you are traveling along the MT border....there will be different things then if you are traveling across N.D. and down to S.D.

Starting in Montana I will make my way via Glendive, MT to Minot and Bismarck in ND and Aberdeen, Pierre and Rapid City in SD.

Just a suggestion. Your route describes a lot of back and forth wasted miles....A better circuitous route is obtainable. You might look at maps and travel from Glendive to Rapid City, over to Pierre.....then up to Bismarck, then to Minot and back to Mt through Northwest N.D. If you are wanting to go to Aberdeen from Pierre then you could go North up to Fargo, Grand Forks....and West to Minot. But, to go to Bismark from Aberdeen would be lots of backtracking. Hope the links help below.

https://www.google.com/search?q=map+...fKP-xwMDNej0M:

You'll want to map each leg of your trip....I used the words "how to map a driving route between Glendive, Mt and Rapid City, S.D. You could do the same for each leg. You'll see that this will save you lots of backtracking and time for your trip. Here is the first search where I looked up a route between Glendive Mt and Rapid City....which are almost directly north and south of each other. https://www.google.com/search?q=how+...hrome&ie=UTF-8

Save yourself a bit of time, and especially if you are renting a car, lots of mileage and money. Good luck to you.
