I totally 2nd this. I was going to suggest these same places, lol. Sullivan's Island SC, Jekyll Island GA, Outer Banks NC, and some of the St. Petersburg/Clearwater FL beaches are our favorites ANYWHERE!

Savannah has nice barrier island and lovely history. Charming area to visit with adults. Jekyll Island are nicely kept and natural.. Hilton Head has nice upscale beach...St. Mary's Island right north of FL/Ga border is nice if you like undeveloped area. Ride the ferry out to island where Vanderbuilts had mention and church where JFK Jr got married. Watch lots of wild horses run the island. St. Augustine has neat island and lots of Spanish history right there...

Preamble -- When my wife and I left South America, we just bought a cheap ticket to Miami, and figured we could sort things out from there. Heres what we did:

At Miami airport, you can get amazingly cheap car rentals for travel within Florida. We rented a car for a week, and went to Goodwill and Walmart, and bought a little tent, a coleman stove, and some kitchenware, maybe $100, and then to the supermarket. Went to a Marlins game that night, then we drove up to the Ocala National Forest, and camped out for a week. Rustic camping, self-pay a few bucks, just a marked camping area with tent pads and a chemical toilet. We had the place all to ourselves. Florida, pre-concrete style.
