Sorry if this is a stupid question, I don't have much experience with motels just hotels. Next week I'm seeing a gig out of town, about 2 hours away and it's gonna let out late (probably around midnight) and I don't wanna be on the road that late. I also don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on a swanky hotel room for just one night either so I was thinking that a motel would be my best option.

Can I just walk into any motel and get a room for the night or do I have to book ahead? Do they only take credit cards like Hotels?

Yes you should make reservations.

You can walk in, and hope they have open rooms, Expect to pay more as a walk in.

Yes, They take credit cards. If they don;t you really don't want to stay there.

You do not have to book ahead for a motel, but it is recommended. Without a reservation you run the risk that the motel is full. Yes they take credit cards. Of course they will also want to see photo ID.

But remember: you get what you pay for. Don't expect the same kind of "hotel experience" at a typical motel.

I usually stay in motels when I travel. Check the reviews. But, it's less stress to reserve ahead of time, and let them know you'll be showing up really late. And yes, they take credit cards. I normally stick to the major chains, just because they are more consistent as far as customer service.

You can make a reservation or just walk in. I always try & book before I leave, cos that's how I roll. You already know the date & location, so just book one. Bring snacks, if you will be hungry after your gig, as most motels do not have room service.

Motel or hotel I'd go ahead and make a reservation. You are attending an event out of town, no idea where you are going, but there could be hundreds of others also planning to stay overnight, not wanting to drive home. There's really no difference about booking between a hotel and motel.

We’ve been very surprised a few times when traveling, that a hotel in some little town was booked solid, due to some event, like a sports event, concert or car race, etc. We always reserve a room in advance to be safe.

You technically don’t need s reservation at most hotels/motels. If they have a vacancy they will give you a room. However, a reservation guarantees you s room and if you don’t have one they may be sold out and you’ll be S.O.L.

OP wasn't asking if they take credit cards. S/he was asking if they ONLY take credit cards. And no, most will accept cash as well.

Best to book in advance and lock in a cheap rate. Showing up at midnight will probably mean paying the highest room rate sometimes double what you would otherwise pay. And you run the risk of every place selling out. Any of the travel apps or websites can show you the best prices. Its possible to lock in the reservation and pay when you get there. If for some reason your plans change and you don't need the room you can cancel and not be charged.
