Hello Everyone - We have a 4-day trip coming up around Christmas, to Fort Lauderdale, FL. We have a toddler and we want to plan a trip around his interests/age. Mostly we want the trip to be peaceful (:-)) combined with family fun. We mostprobably will cover Fort Lauderdale, Miami and plan one day trip to Key West. Pleaseadvise on things to do and visit. Thanks so much in advance!!!
Honestly, you may want to consider skipping Key West. It's at least 4 hours from Miami to Key West (so if you're only going one day, that's 8-10 hours in the car), and I've been reading from friends that they're still a long ways from recovery. Lots of huge piles of debris everywhere.

A couple of suggestions:
1. Definitely skip Key West. It takes too long to get there and back and there's nothing for a toddler to enjoy there. You'll have to deal with a cranky kid the entire day.
2. Definitely go to the beach. It might be too cool for swimming, but kids love to play in the sand and paddle at the water's edge. Don't forget sunscreen and a hat.
3. Move your request to the Ft. Lauderdale subforum. I'm sure the people who frequent that subforum will have plenty of suggestions that your child will enjoy. I raised three kids in South Florida but I haven't lived there for 20 years so I don't have any up-to-date niformation to share.
We took our daughter to Florida when she was about three. Disney world was a bust — she cried when the costumed people approached, especially Goofy and Mickey. We ended up shooing them away when they were headed our way. Sea world (?) was less traumatic. What she remembers is a spiral slide in the little playground at the condo. Not the ocean or beach or the plane ride... We bought her a Mickey Mouse sweatshirt that she loved and wore out— go figure. Parents enjoyed it more. Don’t expect to give them fun memories when they are that small.

Forget Key West ....he won't be interested in anything it has to offer. He's a toddler...how interested in something can he be?
I have several toddler grandchildren who love going to Disney...but, we have annual passes and are there several times month and take breaks during the day so they can nap and recharge. Most visitors do not have that luxury, they dray their tired, cranky, hungry kids thru the parks because they need to 'get their money's worth'. Nothing worse that watching a mom and dad yell at a tired/hungry child while being in the "Happiest Place On Earth". Don't do that to your child.
with only 4 days, one location should fit the bill. Landing at FLL, get over
to Hollywood beach. It has a boardwalk, restaurants, activities, playground, pedal bikes, beach, no cars. Family friendly!
or
go to Miami beach, and find the best beach hotel you can find with a fun family style pool.
you only have for days, you dont want to be stuck in a car longer than you have to.
