I'd use CHEAP hubs with regional access to <$50 flights

If summer in Northern Hemisphere...
LGA or BWI / BKK / FRA or AMS

Winter...
LAX or LAS / BKK / UIO or LIM

Spend as long as possible AWAY.

As Lieqiang said, this is a very cool thread idea, and everyone will probably have different choices.

Since it's almost winter in the northern hemisphere now, I'd head for southern destinations:

-- New Zealand
-- Kenya
-- Argentina

Cool thread!! I have actually flown completely around the world on a single holiday before, LAX-Houston-Istanbul-New Delhi, traveled around India for 3 weeks and did New Delhi-Hong Kong-LAX. If I were to do it again I would do Philippines (Palawan or Boracay), Cape Town, Rio.
