Texting while flying (cost, regulations, airlines, flight)

Are rules and regulations still in place that prevent cell phone use while in the air? as i have family members who fly frequently and was wondering if i could text them while they are en route/

YOU can send texts anytime. THEY should follow the airline rules. Texts will arrive next time the phone is on.

The only way you can text them while they are en route is if they are on the plane's wifi (often costs $$$) and using some sort of wifi enabled messaging. At cruising altitude, they won't have a cellular signal.

Whatsapp will handle it via wifi. (if your recipients have installed Whatsapp)

Google hangouts
Viber
... (some USA based cell carriers, on select systems.)

search flyertalk for some hints to find the gateway / portal on certain airlines. Often you want to initiate the connection / texting recipient as soon as you board (while on the ground). There are some tricks to helping assure your success (and it is never 'assured'...) Airlines seem to have significant IT challenges (too...)
