I want to head out by way of Memphis (Graceland) then St. Louis for the Arch.

After that we are open to anything.
After that it's the Lewis & Clark Trail.
Block lots of extra time to just be in some places a while.

I'm so jealous of you for many reasons! Fort Walton Beach Florida is my favorite place on the planet, and driving through the central US states is a fabulous journey. Honestly, Kansas and Nebraska and South Dakota will blow the cobwebs out of your brain. So calming, so gentle, so pretty. If you are at a stopping point in Topeka Kansas, stay at the Senate Luxury Hotel and get up in the morning and walk around town, including Topeka High School and the courthouse. Who knew Topeka was so charming?

I also recommend Mt. Rushmore. At sundown they have a wonderful Americana slideshow and a tribute to veterans. Wonderful.

Enjoy your trip!

If I were driving from St. Louis to Seattle, and wasn't in a hurry:

This also takes you through the northern half of Yellowstone.

Underrated and great places to see:

Custer State Park in South Dakota. Superior to the Badlands (though they are unique), beautiful, truly where the deer and the antelope play (and buffalo). A stunning park.

Devil's Tower, WY. It's not just a weird rock. Cool hiking spots, beautiful area. Loved it.

Buffalo Bill Cody Museum and also the nightly rodeo in Cody, WY.

Signal Mountain Lodge, Moran WY - stayed here two nights. Baby elk tried to get into our cabin. Backdrop of the Grand Tetons.

A tip: book ahead - these mountain states get really booked up in the summer.

While the OP appears long gone, thank you for this suggestion.
