Fewer car rental days and you won't have to worry about Charleston parking.
It's not always necessary to do a roundtrip car rental. On occasion it is far better, but in my experience 80% of the time I will find a OW that is very close to a RT rental. In this instance on a random 4-day weekend trip in Feb CHS-CHS is $141 and CHS-SAV is $202. Using special discounts should drive both prices down further. I think that is worth the time and hassle of driving back.

Of course, you'll have to be sure that the subsequent one-way or multi city flight options are similar to the roundtrip flight option. Again, in my experience that is true at least 80% of the time.

Savannah is one of my favorite cities. There is so much to do there and it is so beautiful. Classic.

I'm extremely familiar with both. Both are great. We prefer Charleston. They're only 2 hours apart, so I'd do both if I could. IF you have to pick one, I'd go with Charleston. Their restaurants are better and it seems nicer and more elegant overall. But, like I said, we love both. You can get a very nice Airbnb accommodation that isn't very expensive in or on the edge of downtown and walk about anywhere. Enjoy your trip!

This thread from earlier this year was extremely helpful. Thank you to everyone who responded to the OP's questions.

We were on the fence for the same type of trip for 2019, and have booked a 7 day vacation to Savannah and Charleston during my daughter's week off from school in February. We're flying into Charleston and renting a car at the airport, and staying 3 nights in Charleston followed by 4 nights in Savannah, and returning the rental car and flying home from the Savannah airport. We found non-stop airfare in both directions for $220/person, which seemed like a great deal. Can't wait to check out these two amazing cities this winter!

We went to Charleston during the Spoleto festival (highly recommended) and went to Savannah on the same trip. We loved them both. Beaufort, SC, is a lovely little town in between, and we also got to walk on the beach at Hilton Head. All of this can be easily done in a week-long trip without feeling rushed.
