I've driven this route many times over the past 15 years, including about a dozen in '16, and never ran into "nightmare" congestion. In fact, rarely had any. I always crossed mid-day.
Just sayin.
Yea, I have not had too many problems. It could be intimidating to some people driving through that area though. Just try to avoid peak rush times and it's not too bad. I like driving in and around NYC though. Some people would probably go out of their way to avoid driving through parts of NYC.
I rather enjoy the grandeur of the GW bridge. Get on the upper deck for the view, and ignore the trucks. The drive up 9a through Riverdale et all is interesting too. The rest, not so much, especially NJ.

Me too. If it's not too congested, I will sometimes even get off the Jersey turnpike and take the Holland or Lincoln Tunnel and cut across Manhattan to the FDR and take that or even the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and cut through Brooklyn. Yes, these routes will take a little longer, but on weekends etc, it's about the same. So much more to look at along the route though. But I'm not normal lol.
We did the same route a few years ago, driving from Raleigh to Bar Harbor. My husband is from Long Island and it was still a nightmare drive through New York. Then we got to Connecticut and were in stopped traffic for a couple of hours due to road construction. This was back in 2008 (so I guess a few more than a few years ago) and we didn't have a GPS or smart phone, so we were stuck until we could get through that. We did the drive in three days because my parents were with us in their own vehicle and they were in their late 70s, so we didn't want to push too hard each day. Thank goodness because that day the drive, which was supposed to take 6 hours took us more than 9. If I were ever to make that drive again, I think I would take the scenic, more western route, even if it took longer overall. At least we would miss the NYC portion, though Washington, DC isn't fun either, no matter the day of the week (when we came back through, it was a Sunday and we were still in stopped traffic through DC).
