Hello-
My family and I ( total of 3 of us) are taking a trip to the Newport beach area in July of 18.
I've been looking for flights and have found a great price going there but not a good price for our return flight. Has anyone ever booked a one way ticket to go somewhere and then waited for a better deal to book a return flight? Does that sound like something that makes sense or should I hope for a better deal and book a round trip and hope the price goes down? We are open to any airline but we generally use Southwest because it often is the cheapest. We are flying in and out of Houston if that matters. I know I still have plenty of time to book but the price one way is $137 each which is pretty good. Don't want to pass it up if it's unlikely that it will be that low later. Thoughts?

Thanks all.

Where are you trying to fly into in California?

I doubt those flights would drop any more than what you are seeing.. I look for flights from out here to San Antonio on Southwest and thats usually the lowest I see.

Thoughts?
Houston to LAX round trip + cost of car rental for the week and the drive to/from Newport Beach.
Will you need a hotel as well?

Personally... I'd fly into San Francisco and spend a day or two there
Then rent a car for the drive down the coast and then fly out of San Diego.

I was told to fly into John Wayne Airport as it has closest access to where we are going. I have also checked flying into LA but honestly flights aren't that much cheaper.
We have already booked a home walking distance to the beach. We can't add a day visiting other places so must fly in and out of an airport close to newport beach.

SNA (John Wayne) is pretty close.. ONT (Ontario) sometimes has good deals as well and outside of rush hour is only about an hour or so away.

I did a quick Google Flight search, though, and if you can find the flights you want for 137 each way, I doubt you will find them cheaper.. Most I saw were in 350-400 range RT

$137 is for one way there and I know that's a good price.. That's why I posted the question and asked if anyone had bought a one way ticket and waited to purchase the return ticket. I'd rather get a great price flying home too, instead of 350-400$ Thank you!

It's close. Is that a direct flight from Houston? (I hate layovers and transfers)
I'd rather drive down from LAX (or even shuttle it) than to be delayed en route. LINK

Houston has some direct flights into John Wayne Airport. The 137$ flight into John Wayne is
not direct and stops in Phoenix.
I don't mind stopping to save the money especially tickets X 3.
Any other airports besides, LA and Ontario I should look at?
Thanks everyone!

I've done that before on other flights (especially when booking award flights).. There is definitely some risk involved!

I don't blame you.. PHX is an easy airport to connect through!
