I always fly non stop, but this fare with one stop was to good to pass up, so I booked yesterday.
My email from UA says it is processing for next 24 hours until they receive confirmation from SAS, the second carrier I would connect with in London on to Copenhagen.

Is this common? What are the chances it won't be confirmed and UA will cancel it?

It's very common, and the chances the booking won't be ticketed are small. Do follow up with United Airlines if you don't receive confirmation that the fare has been ticketed after 24 hours has passed.

For cash purchases, generally no big deal. Somewhat more concern for award tickets because the ticketing airline needs to make sure that there really is award space on the partner airline and you didn't book something that only exist in a cache and had been sold out in real time.

Cash, not rewards

Nope nada they could not confirm with SAS, so cancelled reservation, more than likely because the fare was too good to believe low
