Maybe its just me...my family (hubby, 11 and 12 year olds and me)...we just have different desires. I am trying to plan a week long family vacation in August and for the life of me I cant even come up with a destination!

Hubby likes to relax...a lot. Not at all into out doors things. No hiking, biking, kayaking, etc. He likes luxury resorts, nice restaurants, mid-day naps.

I like to avoid tourist areas. I want to feel like a local. I much prefer to rent a vocation rental and "move in" for the week. I am not very athletic or outdoorsy either, but do try to do things outside my comfort zone to make my kids happy. I hate excessive heat!!

12 year old likes adventure, the ocean, wild life. I think we always disappoint on some level. He loves going into the ocean (I HATE IT!!!). He really wants to go somewhere with very clear calm ocean water for snorkeling and more swimming.

11 year old likes a more calm environment...but if she has sun and a pool, she is happy. She is kind of hard to travel with because she gets very nervous around new things and takes a couple days to settle in and join the vacation.

We also have a disabled family member so that is much harder to plan around.

I have been researching places for a couple weeks and cant even come close to settling on one. Why is it so hard?! Any good resources for looking for places? I have read 100 lists and nothing seems to suit us. I might be over thinking it.

Jamaica?

Separate the location/destination questions from the daily activity questions.

Once there (wherever 'there' might be)...
it's about each being willing to do whatever activities each group/grouping prefers.
And having tolerance for something else to do while 'they' go off and do that.

We do tend to manage ok on vacation. Mostly everyone respects eachother's desires, so we take turns doing what we like. And going along with other things that aren't our cup of tea. And with a disabled family member and an anxious kid, we do split up sometimes.

I guess I am just trying to check all the boxes and pick the "perfect" place.

Honolulu Hawaii. Get a nice hotel, leave the husband sleeping by the pool and you take the kids snorkeling and to the hula shows and the Polynesian village and the water park. Just on the other side of Diamond Head, there is a park where you snorkel and the colorful fish will come and take food out of your hand.

It doesn't exist.

I was considering Hawaii actually. We went not that long ago (Maui) and had a fantastic time. I wasn't so sure about the big city vibe of Honolulu, though. And we are likely going there in a couple years for a family event.

We did have a blissful time in Maui though.

Vacation police here - Please do Not try to feed the fish in Hawaii , unless they are in a koi pond!

Hawaii may be a good choice for that family vacation, it does have most of the things OP listed but a bit of a long flight for just a week long trip.

So if you had a fantastic time in Hawaii what's the issue with other beach oriented destinations in Mexico, Central America or the Caribbean?
