Hi all-

Our family of 4 has round trip airline tickets from Charlotte NC to Newark for a week of vacation to NYC in April. DH flies a couple of times a year with his work, but I haven't flown in many years and the kids have never been on a plane.

I have a valid SC driver's license (where we live), but we have no state issued picture IDs for the kids. They are not old enough to drive yet. DH says he has always been fine flying domestically with his driver's license.

The TSA site says that minors flying with their parents do not need additional identification. We don't have passports, as there has been no need.

My understanding is that some of this is up to the airline.

How should I prepare? Should I take the kids to the DMV (in SC) and get them a state issued photo ID, or should I just bring their birth certificates to the airport with us, or both?

I am hoping to hear from anyone who has recently flown domestically with their school-aged kids, or who knows the drill.

There is a lot of conflicting information out there. Things have definitely changed over the last few years!

All of our vacations until now have been road trips.

Many thanks in advance!

~Kimmie

It's not really necessary, but for your peace of mind, carry copies of their birth certificates. There's absolutely no need to get them photo IDs. The only time I've ever heard any sort of identification is necessary is when there's a dispute of whether a child is young enough to be a lap passenger, or should be charged for their own seat.

Yep no need to get a picture ID for the kiddos. Bring a copy of their birth certificates if you want to some piece of mind.

A little OT since it won't effect your upcoming trip, but just a heads up since you're from SC. An SC drivers license won't get through TSA after October 2018. You need to get one of the new REAL ID ones. The DMV just started issuing them in the last month or so.

The date has been extended to sometime in 2020 ... October I think.

The annoyance there is that child passports are only good for five years.

I know. The burden of having to fill out two pieces of paper and two pictures twice a decade for problem free travel is nearly too much to bear.

Why spend the $80 per when they aren't needed?

Do, don't, don't care. The question is what ID is needed, and the short answer is "it depends".

With a passport you never have to worry because you have the correct document 100% of the time for travel anywhere in the world.

Never having to worry has value as well. I swear I will never understand the reticence that Americans have about getting a passport.

For a family that doesn't really travel and will have drivers licenses and copies of kids' of birth certificates, getting passports would be a waste of money.
