International. 1 month.
State side. 2 weeks.
Keeps things in check. No sense is having buyers remorse. Once planned a trip three months out for Dominican republic. Two weeks before the arrival I get a travelers warning on their contaminated water and insect carrier infestation. Called that day,got a full refund from airline and hotel.

With freedom to go whenever I please, I can do that, because my travel doesn't have to be shoehorned into a job vacation.
I've done last minute (2 weeks out) trips, sudden gotta-get-out-of-town for a night trips, and overseas planned-a-year-in-advance trips. Just depends on what I am doing.

It depends; if I need to renew a passport it can be months in advance.

I usually know where I want to go, so I set up alerts for cheap tickets, and if the time frame is OK (certain time might be not desirable for certain areas) I just book the flight, and start to make other arrangements like check the prices for accommodation and car rental.
Or I set up a price alert to "any" location, and decide to travel when the price is right. Those are usually just a week long trips.
I always was able to travel at whatever time I wanted, and my passport is always valid.

Domestic: "Hey let's go". "Okay"! Sometimes as little as a couple of days. Sometimes a month.

International: We are starting this week for a fall trip. Discussions have been, and will continue to be, held regarding international for the next 10 years. Whether we still can for that long is debatable.

After the international travel is no longer feasible we will drop back to domestic and plan farther ahead then.

If it is something along the line of a weekend trip I might get the idea and be on my way the same day. Usually it is only a couple days before I actually go.

For longer trips I usually start planning 1 or 2 weeks ahead of time. Only a couple times has it been longer than a month in advance.

For major trips, I plan a year in advance.

I always plan some time in advance. My current job is extremely flexible, but my last job made it very difficult to take time off without significant preparation. For family trips with my parents and sister’s family, it is usually anywhere from 6-14 months in advance and then for smaller trips, it is anywhere from 3-8 months in advance. If I am just doing somewhere within short driving distance or for a weekend where I don’t have to book a flight, I may do that a few weeks in advance.

If I'm redeeming frequent flyer miles for award tickets and/or using hotel points to cover part of a stay for a 'big trip', it seems like getting tickets 5+ months out gives the best number of options for a reasonable number of points or miles. (The idea process goes far longer than that, and I'm kicking around ideas for 'big trip' 2020 already) For getaway weekends, I've done 'hey, do you want to drive to Tampa today? I can do some quick hotel reservations'.

If I'm taking a week's vacation, I would research at least a few weeks before I plan to put in my vacation. I want some idea of what I'll be doing.

For a weekend trip? It's a very rough outline. I'm not an itinerary person and often just wing it as I go. I might have a couple of highlights I want to see/do, but I try not to be too rigid.
