When going to Europe on an extended vacation, we want to visit and explore each city ourselves. Yet, it would be nice to take one tour with a guide for each city. Any recommendations? TIUA

Instead of an actual company per se, we tend to utilize Free Walking Tours (and tip at the end). We have done many of these... all of them ranging from good to amazing.

Also, we tend to do food tours of cities.. Have done ones in Amsterdam (x2), Prague, Marrakesh, Krakow and maybe somewhere else (escapes me at the moment).. We have had excellent luck with these.

Check out Viator in any of the cities you're planning to visit. They do city tours and you can also get 'quick pass" tickets to local attractions through them. They should suit your every need.

Well it's either one or the other - 1.) explore the city yourself, 2.) take a tour. Which one do you want to do? For anyplace in Western Europe the tourist infrastructure and transportation network is such that a tour is not necessary.
However there is a compromise:

Take one of the GetOn/GetOff buses (every city seems to have them) that go in a huge circular route around the city and stop at all the famous sites, and give like a spoken tour while they drive. They have a fleet of buses that follow this circular route so you simply get off where you want (usually at the nearest tourist site) and get back on when you want. Every European city of any size or tourist value seems to have them.

While I've had success with using Viator, let's be clear about them. They are not doing or operating any of the tours they advertise. They are a booking agency for tour operators. They advertise the tours, then facilitate booking, then take a few.

Nothing at all wrong with that, but it's good practice to vet the tour operator themselves before booking using sites other than Viator.
