I generally follow the rules for international flights. If I need/want to fudge it a bit I weigh the consequences carefully. How much trouble will it be to reschedule. London to NYC, no big deal if you miss a flight. From Djbouti to Amsterdam I could be stuck for days!!! I might get to that flight 4 hours early!!!

I've flown Lufthansa a couple times, including recently from FRA-LAX and really enjoyed it.

It really depends on time of year and other factors. I've seen security lines (pre-check be damned) go for well over an hr in some cities at high peak travel times. I wouldn't want to arrive two hours before and have to go through that, thereby seriously risking missing my flight. I tend to arrive at least three hours prior to an international flight, but have arrived as early as 12 hours before (and just slept in the airport, which beat paying for another night in the hotel).
