Planning on starting the trip around 4am from Plano and would like to complete the trip in one day. Not sure if we should take the i20/i10 route or the 40/17. Any suggestions, advice, input? Thanks!

That the southern route I-20 & I-10, avoid the downhill mountain route from Flagstaff with a truck & trailer. Coming up from El Paso & Tucson will be much safer and no much difference in time and mileage distance. Google says 15 hours but you're looking more at 20 hrs with either route.

I-20 & I-10 15+ hrs

1-40 & I-17 15+ hrs

I-20 to I-10. Doesn't get any easier than that. But don't expect to do it all in one day. Even in a sedan going the speed limit of 80 or 75 we only made it from next door (Richardson) to Las Cruces before calling it a night. Another time, driving a pickup, we made it as far as El Paso. I seriously doubt you're going to make it to Phoenix in one day driving a rental truck that's towing a car. Also be aware that motels in the Odessa area have sky high rates. I avoid overnighting between Big Spring and El Paso. Either it's way too expensive or there's nothing there.

Definitely avoid I17 with a trailer (since there is a reasonable alternative).

Not saying it's unsafe, or that you will have a problem, but the curves and downhill parts will be exciting on I17. I have been behind more than one truck with overheated brakes.

The Department of Transportation limits professional drivers to 11 hours of driving per day.

From the DOT website: “Safety is our highest priority,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “These rules make common sense, data-driven changes to reduce truck driver fatigue and improve safety for every traveler on our highways and roads.”

Your trip is 1100 miles and you really plan to do it in one day? I would stop in Las Cruces, NM along the route for the evening over El Paso just for security reasons.
