Some years ago I rented a cabin on a lake in the Adirondacks. I knew the property where I wanted to rent and chose a particular cabin on this motel's property because of it's proximity to the water. I had a large car top kayak which would have been murder to haul up and down the hill to the lake every time that I wanted to use it.

It turned out that the cabin by the water was available and I sent a check as a deposit. I requested a receipt specifying that the cabin that I was requested would be the cabin that we would be getting. This is when the song and dance started. It started with his wife not knowing how to use the fax machine. Finally I told him that I wanted a receipt specifying the cabin number or I would be forced to look else where for my vacation. I wasn't rude but I was insistent.

When we got there he spent time making us feel uncomfortable.

What are your thoughts on this?

Use email. Faxes died a decade ago.

Man, if you could carry a kayak like you carry a grudge, you could have had a cabin five miles down the road.

OK OK I get it.
Some things need closure.
What I need from you people is a motive other than what I suspected.

Here is what I surmised. I believe that this prick wanted to hold this primo cabin for one of his regulars. If they called and reserved, I would have had a cabin in an inconvenient place.

Occam's Razor. Simplest answer is likely the correct one. I agree with you. Now quoting that other great theologian Elsa:

What’s a FAX? Didn’t those go the way of Western Union telegrams?

I haven’t had a land line to send and receive faxes in years. I suppose I could go through the gyrations to set up an internet fax server account if I had to. I live in an email world. Worst case, I print, sign, scan, and email if my iPhone and the signature application won’t work.

Well, this 'prick', is the owner of the cabin and has every right to deny your request (demand, actually) for a specific cabin. Your 'inconvenience' doesn't really matter to anyone other than yourself.

You misread my complaint. The cabin owner has every right to refuse me that particular cabin before I was assured of it's availability and money changed hands. My demand was for a receipt with the agreed upon cabin number is no different than a long term lease for a specific apartment.

For this owner to assure me of the cabin's availability and then switch it upon my arrival would have been bait and switch.

After I hit the save key my wife who is an attorney said that the owner had the obligation of specific performance. Case closed.
