I've never went outside the US before and I'm getting prepared to travel to canada on a work permit. How, and where, should I go to convert a large amount of USD to CAD?

Always at destination, but depends how large. Perhaps is better to open a bank account that has also presence in Canada.

Canada. Banks on the US side won't exchange, even in border towns. Canadian banks are equipped to do foreign exchange (all currencies) as if it were a "banking service", which Canadian banks still do.

If you have a work permit, you probably have whatever documentation is required to open a Canadian bank account. Your bank will issue an Interac card, which can be used at ATM machines anywhere in the world, and for point of sale in Canada.

Having operated a business in the city of Detroit, we accepted Canadian currency from about 20% of the customer. The two banks that we dealt with exchanged currency at a rate similar to the Canadian banks in Windsor.

At least one bank in my small town in Arizona also handles Canadian currency at a decent exchange rate. Why not? There are thousands of Canadians who winter here.

I'm told I'll need $2,500 in canadian currency in the program. I saw that means just under $2,000 USD, luckily for me, so that's how much I'll need to convert.

Surely they aren't asking for cash? Couldn't you just do a bank transfer?
